PNMBR – LAYNE

Today marks Layne’s one-year anniversary with us at SBC and we felt it was the perfect time to thank him for his efforts here, and profile him on our Proudly Not Made By Robots series. If you recall, PNMBR is a feature series on the people that make Scratchtown great. It’s a look behind the curtain with the people that work and frequent our humble establishment, or have relationships with us outside our hometown.

Now, on to Layne. Mr. Ford works in our taproom as a beertender and hails from the great Sandhills community of Cody, Nebraska. Layne is a big fan of outdoor adventure and travel, like many of us (nearly all of us, actually!) here at the brewery. So here’s what makes Layne, Layne:

What is your favorite SBC beer? Sideburns’ Milk Stout, The General Hoppy Wheat & Corncob Smoked Cream Ale.

What is your favorite non-SBC beer? Dark O’ the Moon from Elysian, Octoberfest from Sam Adams and Fresh Squeezed IPA from Deshutes.

Who is your favorite Star Wars character? Han Solo.

What is your favorite thing to do in nature? Hike, ski, kayak, camp and hunt.

If you had a year to go on adventures, where would you go and why? Andes Mountains through Argentina, Chile and Peru, because it feels like a worthy adventure.

What advice would you give your 18-year old self? Travel more and be more health conscious.

What is your favorite SBC event? Scratch-Patty’s Day.

What do you like best about working at SBC? Meeting new people with different life experiences.

PROUDLY NOT MADE BY ROBOTS

As we near our fifth birthday this year, we’ve met a lot of great people along the way. Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and many of you we’ve met since then.

After opening in 2013, we have brewed over 120 different beer styles, grown our production three-fold, added the wonderful Reilly family to our ownership circle, increased our payroll to nine, began distributing through Central and Eastern Nebraska, hosted over a 100 (yes really!) events and even won a few awards for our beers. It has been an incredibly rewarding trip for us. Without our SBC family and our customers, however, none of it would be possible.

So we are planning to recognize those that have helped us along the way. “Proudly Not Made By Robots” was a cheeky t-shirt design we launched our first year, but it was also a mantra we’ve carried since the beginning. We did then, and continue to do, operate the old fashioned way. We brew and bottle by hand. Owners work our taproom, events and festivals side-by-side with our staff. We often break bread with our customers on the other side of the bar as well, acknowledging that without our community of Ord, and our community of dedicated beer drinkers, we’d have nothing.

We believe it is essential to share the stories of the individuals that have helped us get here: our SBC family and our customers. We believe great people create great companies and we want you to know who they are. They deserve to be recognized!

So in the coming months, stay tuned for stories from Scratchtown. We hope you enjoy reading about the great people that make our world work, because we appreciate them greatly!

SIGN THE PETITION

Greetings and good morning! We’re asking our fans, customers, friends and families to consider signing a petition that has become an important issue for us. We’d like to ask the Ord City Council to formally change the name of Ord to Scratchtown. This name change will honor history and tradition (“Name it Scratchtown” as General Ord famously said in 1874), along with recognizing the new realities in the 21st Century. Synergistic collaboration between the names will literally put Ord, er we mean Scratchtown, on the map again recognizing the economic and cultural importance of having a brewery in our community. So what do you think? Doesn’t being a Scratchtonian have a better ring to it than an Ordite? If you think so, sign the petition HERE.

Cheers and Happy Spring!
